Don't be a dick

I originally saw this video in Hoyden about Town (there is also a transcript) not so long ago. Video self is fairly old, it is from LugRadio Live UK 2008. Anyway Matthew Garrett summed up my thoughts so well in his speech that I wanted to post it here.

I’m lucky that my share of dicks has been small. But you know what I don’t want to hear that there are no girls online (oh and marriage proposal isn’t good first line, not even as a joke), nor I want to be told to chill out when chilling out is not a solution, and damn I don’t want to say “No” more than once.

You don’t need to be overly politically correct to take account people around you. So let’s be friends, eat ice cream (low lactose, please) and kick the trolls out.

  • Oh man… that dudes “outfit” is a bit over the top.

Im with you. A troll-less low-lactose icecream realm is a good thing…You get kind of tired of trying to learn new things and make new friends and having to fight your way past the troll layer first. But how many people are willing to stand up for, or against people at risk to themselves? I hope more an more.

I hope so too. I’m not very good in this communicating thing (as in opening my mouth and saying something). But I try and I wish that other people would try too.

Just tell the idiots that they are crap. Sometimes it helps to be very frank if blunt about it. Ice cream in winter? You people up there *are* hardcore! :P

  • It’s a shame that things like the Ubuntu Code of Conduct are sometimes needed. However, if it sets a standard of behavior that makes the community a nicer place for everybody to thrive in, then great.
